The Emerging Revolution of Plastic-to-Energy: Advantages and Industrial Practices of Chemical Recycling

Plastics, as high-molecular organic materials, can be converted into energy through direct incineration as fuel, yet this approach leads to inefficient resource utilization and secondary pollution. Chemical recycling of waste plastics, as an emerging treatment method, transforms "white pollution" into high-value resources, demonstrating significant advantages in environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

From "White Pollution" to Green Resources

The fundamental value of chemical recycling lies in its ability to alter the fate of waste plastics, achieving true resource circularity. Globally, a substantial portion of mixed, contaminated, or low-value plastics—such as flexible packaging and film bags—cannot be effectively recycled through mechanical means. Accounting for approximately 46% of total plastic production, these challenging waste streams are precisely what chemical recycling excels at processing, significantly boosting overall recycling rates.

Unlike mechanical recycling, which often results in "downcycling," chemical recycling breaks down plastics to the molecular level, regenerating new plastics of comparable quality to virgin materials—enabling true "cradle-to-cradle" closed-loop management. This means plastics can be recycled indefinitely, achieving infinite circularity.

Pyrolysis oil derived from waste plastics has broad applications. Studies show that replacing crude oil with chemically recycled plastic oil can reduce carbon dioxide emissions. When these feedstocks are used to produce new polyethylene and polypropylene, the resulting products also exhibit a lower carbon footprint than those derived from crude oil, directly contributing to climate change mitigation.

Unlocking the Treasure of "Urban Oil Fields"

Chemical recycling not only addresses environmental challenges but also represents a financially viable enterprise, converting former "environmental burdens" into substantial economic wealth.

The outputs of chemical recycling—such as pyrolysis oil and combustible gas—can serve as fuels ("plastic-to-fuel") or be further processed into high-demand basic chemical feedstocks like ethylene and propylene. This transforms waste plastics from a cost center into valuable "urban minerals."

The economic benefits of chemical recycling significantly surpass those of incineration and landfilling. Data indicates that when international oil prices remain above $45 per barrel, its cost competitiveness becomes particularly pronounced, reducing dependence on crude oil.

Niutech: Technological Breakthroughs and Industrial Implementation

In the field of chemical plastic recycling, Niutech stands as a representative enterprise whose work exemplifies the advantages of chemical recycling.

Niutech's self-developed plastic pyrolysis technology has successfully enabled chemical recycling of waste plastics by solving global technical challenges such as system coking and dynamic sealing during feeding/discharge, achieving a pyrolysis rate exceeding 99.5%. Its technology has reached international advanced standards, with key innovations like coking prevention technology achieving global leadership.

Niutech's solutions have been industrially implemented in multiple countries, including Denmark, the UK, South Korea, and Thailand, with some projects operating stably for over a decade—fully demonstrating the maturity, reliability, and adaptability of its technological approach across diverse markets.

Niutech's waste plastic pyrolysis technology has been honored with the National Science and Technology Progress Award and has obtained international certifications such as EU CE and German TÜV, paving the way for global market access.

With its resource circularity, economic viability, and technological maturity, chemical recycling of waste plastics offers a promising pathway to addressing plastic pollution challenges.
