Scrap Tire Recycling and Utilization: The Innovative Commercial Value of Pyrolysis

Amid the wave of the circular economy and the "dual-carbon" goals, recycling innovation centered on pyrolysis technology is transforming these troublesome "black pollution" scrap tires into high-value energy and industrial raw materials, forging a path of commercial value reinvention from "black pollution" to "green gold."

The scrap tire recycling industry is demonstrating immense commercial potential. From a global perspective, the market size for tire pyrolysis products was approximately $2.253 billion in 2024 and is projected to double to $4.759 billion by 2033.

The commercial logic behind this growth is solid: on the supply side, the continued increase in vehicle ownership means that auto repair shops, 4S dealerships, and logistics fleets continuously generate scrap tires, ensuring a stable and widely distributed source of feedstock; on the demand side, downstream applications for pyrolysis oil, recovered steel wire, and recovered carbon black cover multiple fields including building materials, transportation, and industrial energy, maintaining steady demand year-round.

Scrap tire pyrolysis technology is the core pathway for achieving resource recovery, harmless treatment, and volume reduction of scrap tires. Through tire pyrolysis equipment, the technology decomposes old tires to produce high-value-added products such as recovered oil, carbon black, steel wire, and combustible gas, realizing the conversion of tires into fuel and other high-value products. Compared with traditional scrap tire treatment methods, pyrolysis products command high economic value and represent an innovative breakthrough in business models, significantly enhancing the terminal value of tire recycling operations.

The spillover benefits of pyrolysis are substantial. Processing 1 ton of scrap tires via pyrolysis reduces approximately 1.1 tons of carbon dioxide emissions compared with virgin material production. Traditional production of 1 ton of virgin carbon black consumes 1.5–2.0 tons of petroleum and releases nearly 3 tons of carbon dioxide, whereas the use of recovered carbon black from pyrolysis can significantly reduce the carbon footprint. As global carbon trading markets mature, pyrolysis enterprises can not only generate revenue from selling recovered oil and carbon black but also obtain a second growth curve by selling carbon credits.

In the field of scrap tire pyrolysis technology, Niutech is an undisputed industry leader. With nearly four decades of deep focus on pyrolysis technology, the company is a standard-setter and technology leader in China's pyrolysis sector and a national-level "Specialized, Sophisticated, and Innovative" "Little Giant" enterprise. Niutech's self-developed "Key Technology and Equipment for Pyrolysis Resource Recovery of Organic Solid Waste" has been honored with the National Science and Technology Progress Award, successfully resolving long-standing industry pain points and achieving a pyrolysis rate exceeding 99%.

Niutech's technology and integrated equipment have obtained seven major international certifications, including EU CE, German TÜV, EU ATEX explosion-proof, and ISCC International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, making Niutech the first domestic manufacturer of high-end intelligent continuous pyrolysis equipment capable of simultaneously meeting this comprehensive set of standards. Its scrap tire pyrolysis projects have obtained dual ISCC-EU/PLUS certification, becoming a compliant solution under the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), with pyrolysis products—pyrolysis oil and recovered carbon black (rCB)—approved for entry into high-end chemical markets.

Niutech's globalization strategy has achieved notable success, with its equipment successfully exported to dozens of countries and regions, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Brazil, Hungary, and South Korea, and with multiple benchmark projects operating successfully.

In Europe, Niutech's benchmark projects are particularly prominent. The successful delivery of the Germany project demonstrates that its equipment meets the stringent environmental and technical performance requirements of both the EU and Germany. The Hungary project has been recognized as an EU demonstration project, with all testing indicators complying with relevant EU requirements and regulations, establishing it as an EU-standard demonstration project.

In 2025, Niutech continued to achieve success in the European market: a long-standing European client placed two orders within a single year, completing multiple repeat purchases; in July 2026, the company signed a pyrolysis production line sales contract with a global energy giant, with both parties expected to move toward long-term cooperation.
